Bawtry Mayflower Primary School aims to ensure that the requirements of all pupils who have special educational needs are addressed. All pupils are given access to a broad, balanced and relevant education and wherever possible the needs of the pupil are met within the mainstream of education. We aim to maximise all children’s potential within a happy and stimulating environment where their interest and curiosity is aroused and in which they feel confident and secure.

What are SEND?

Children have additional educational needs if they have a learning difficulty that calls for additional educational provision to be made for them. ‘Children have a learning difficulty if they:

· Have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of the same age.

· Have a disability that prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for children of the same age in schools within the area of the local authority.

· Are under compulsory school age and fall within the definitions above or would so do if special educational provision was not made for them.’ (Code of Practice September 2014)

There are now four broad areas of SEND, these are:

· Communication and Interaction

· Cognition and Learning

· Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties

· Sensory and/or Physical Difficulties

Some children may have needs in one or more of these areas.

How do we identify, assess and monitor additional needs?

All our children’s needs are identified and met as early as possible through:

· observation, assessment, target setting and monitoring arrangements (cycle of assessment, plan, do and review)

· daily formative assessment

· listening to and following up parental concerns

· listening to and taking into account the child’s views, wishes and feelings

· the analysis of data including baseline assessments, termly attainment updates, and end of Key Stage achievement to track individual children’s progress over time

· reviewing and improving teachers’ understanding of a wide range of needs and effective strategies to meet those needs

· liaison with schools and other settings on phase and in year transfer

· exchanging information from other services across education, health, care and the voluntary sector involving an external agency, and the Educational Psychology Service (EPS) as a minimum, where it is considered that a special educational need may be significant and long term and may require more in-depth and frequently reviewed cycles of assess, plan, do and review
