Each week in our Friday Celebration Assembly, we celebrate our stars of the week. Each class teacher chooses 2 children from their class each week who have really impressed them.
Here are this week's stars:
Foundation
Aaron in Nursery has joined in with Read Write Inc., this week and has been a superstar!
Patrick in Reception has been a superstar at helping his friends in Read, Write, Inc.
1/2A Mrs Davies
Isaac - for never giving up even when he finds work tricky. He approaches tasks with enthusiasm and a smile.
Ottavia - for really trying to do her very best and having a "I can do it" attitude. This has resulted in some fantastic progress in her learning.
1/2B Miss Cruickshanks
Lilly Rose - for never being scared of having a go even when a task is challenging her. You have developed a can do attitude and I am so proud of you!
Bret - for gaining resilience in tasks that you once would have asked for help with and for not giving up!
1/2C Mrs Birkinshaw/Mrs Taylor
George T - for trying his best to listen carefully in class and not giving up in his writing.
Mason - for always trying his best to show respect to the adults and children. He is always ready to get started in every lesson. Never give up this enthusiasm, Mason!
3/4A Mrs Wood
Ella showed real bravery, courage and determination in our fractions lessons this week. She listened carefully, worked incredibly hard, asked questions and her excellent work showed this!
Jayden has been courageous this week as he completed work that he thought was too challenging. He asked for help and listened really carefully to his partner.
3/4B Mrs Perry
Sophia A - for being brave at a new school. Also for being courageous and sharing her thoughts about fractions, even when everyone else thought different. She wasn't afraid to say what she thought.
Harshana - for being courageous with new concepts - fractions, water cycle, food chains. Not being afraid to just have a go.
5/6A Miss Dunn
Rowan - Our focus this week through school has been to be courageous enough to make the right choices, even when others may not. Rowan has shown the courage this week to consistently make the right choices in all lessons and for all adults. He has shown courage and determination to push himself to complete difficult tasks and challenges and, as always, has shown great respect to all adults and children in school.
Erin - Our focus this week through school has been to be courageous enough to make the right choices, even when others may not. Erin has shown the courage and determination this week to be a successful learner. She has tackled difficult tasks and challenges with confidence and has given all lessons her complete focus to ensure that she completes all tasks to the very best that she can. Erin has been courageous when setting a good example for other children and always doing what is right.
5/6B Mrs Pickersgill/Mrs Walker
Lucy L - for being courageous in maths. When Lucy comes across a problem in maths that she is unsure of, she has a go anyway and is not afraid to ask for help if she needs it.
Imogen G - for working hard. This week, Imogen has tried really hard to improve her handwriting and presentation! Keep up the good work!
Possible strike action
Please see the information below which was emailed to parents/carers yesterday.
Dear Families,
Following recent ballots by teacher unions, I am writing to inform you that the National Education Union (NEU) intend to carry out industrial action over the national pay offer and their members plan to strike over a number of days in the coming months.
The dates are:
*Wednesday 1st February
*Tuesday 28th February
*Wednesday 15th March
*Thursday 16th March
I wanted to get in touch with you promptly as the impact of the industrial action will mean that you will need to consider additional childcare arrangements on these dates. At the moment, I am assessing the impact this may have on our school and will inform parents of this at the earliest opportunity. Whilst as a school we regret any inconvenience this may cause, we must respect that members of any professional association/union have the right to take this action following a legal ballot.
I would like to recognise that I understand the frustrations of many teachers with workload and pay issues, something we have seen documented by recent strike action in other professions. The commitment of our staff to your children remains as high as ever and any decisions that staff make will not be taken lightly.
While trade unions have informed their members of their intention to strike, there is also the possibility that through ongoing negotiations the strikes may not take place. I will keep you informed as the situation develops before the first day of strike action on 1st February.
Mrs Lisa Powell (Headteacher)
Wellbeing Week
As advised, next week is Wellbeing Week in school. The mission is to promote and encourage the physical and mental health and wellbeing of our children and the wider community. The children are encouraged to come in comfortable, free-flowing clothes and sensible shoes all week please (for example, their PE kit or similar clothing.
We hope as many parents/carers as possible can join us for the following events:
Monday 23rd January - Parent workshop with Carl from Kidzfit - in the lower hall 3pm to 3.30pm
Thursday 26th January - Breakfast with a book - in the lower hall 9am to 10am
If you haven't yet returned your reply slip to let us know that you will be attending either or both of these sessions, please return it on Monday to your child's class teacher.
News from around school
On Monday, we held a whole school drumming workshop. Each class took it in turns to join Milla, the amazing drummer, to learn some drumming patterns. The sound in the hall was amazing and Milla's enthusiasm was infectious! The children had a fantastic time. The funds raised from the chocolate raffle at Christmas helped to pay for the workshop, so we are extremely grateful to those who were able to donate chocolate items and to those who sent money in for raffle tickets.
This week in the Foundation Stage we have been learning all about Chinese New Year. We have had lots of fun doing a range of activities including learning how to do the lion dance in PE, making paper chain dragons, writing chinese numbers and exploring different chinese artefacts.
Year 1/2 have had a planetarium visit today. The children entered the huge dome that was completely dark and immersed them all into a wonderful experience about the universe! It was an incredible way to learn about the wonders of space. The children were able to ask lots of interesting questions all about space. They had an amazing time and we're sure they will be desperate to share their experience with their grown ups tonight.
At the start of the year, Mrs Wood brought in one spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) for each Year 3/4 class. The idea is for each class to grow as many plants as possible. The main plant was split into smaller plants and the offshoot were also planted. The children are responsible for watering and potting on the plants as well as choosing the size of the next pot.
Mrs Perry's class have named their plants John, Edward, Jeffrey, Timmy and Tokyo,
Mrs Wood's class have named their plants Tom, Yola, Ivy, Diamond and Emerald.
In science, we have been using our previous learning about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores to create food chains. We learned that all food chains start with a producer, an organism that makes it's own food.
We also learned that consumers can be classified as prey or predators. We then created a variety of food chains, starting with different producers.
Upcoming PTA events
Our PTA has organised some fun events which will be taking place before half term. Please see the posters and information below for further details.
Message from the PTA
The children have worked very hard with Mrs Taylor to create a plan for the allotment at school and now it's time to put their ideas in to action!! The space will provide lots of learning opportunities, as well as being somewhere to relax and connect with the outdoors. We can't wait to see it when it's finished!
We are starting the project on Saturday 28th January and would love people to come down and lend us a hand. We'll be clearing the space, marking out the plan, and laying slabs ready for the new greenhouse and shed.
Please come along and see us, even if it's just for an hour!
If you're able to provide support please message Kirsty Ellis on 07787 570844.
We will be sending out a letter at the beginning of next week regarding the Crafternoon sessions. Please ensure you return the reply slip for these events as soon as possible if you would like to take part, so that we can let our PTA know how many parents and children will be attending.
If you have any teddies to donate for the Teddy Exchange, please bring them to the school office by Monday 30th January.
SEND specific sessions
We have been asked to make parents/carers aware of the organisations across Doncaster that hold SEND specific sessions for children and young people. These sessions are a great opportunity to meet other parents and carers which provide a support network, so doesn't only have the benefits for the child/young person. Further information regarding days and times of the different sessions can be found on most social media platforms or give the individual organisations a call.
We have also provided a link to the above poster, just in case the details above aren't too clear.
Please also see below information regarding a support group for families of those with autism or on the pathway and some discount cards they may be eligible for.
