Stars of the week
Each week in our Friday Celebration Assembly, we celebrate our stars of the week. Each class teacher chooses 2 children from their class each week who have really impressed them. Here are the children who have been chosen this week.
Nursery & Reception
Hattie is our star of the week in Nursery this week. Hattie always follows our school rules, ensuring that she keeps herself and others safe in the classroom. Hattie is great at spotting things that are laying around on the floor and picking them up so that we don’t fall over them!
Star of the week in Reception is Max. Max listened carefully to our assembly about road safety on Monday, he then shared how to keep safe when crossing the road and when going out and about at home, with his friends in class. Max has shown his understanding of road safety through our drawing club lessons this week noticing how the postman could keep safe when delivering his post. He has also shared other people that can keep us safe such as police officers, the ambulance and firefighters. Well done Max!
Year 1
Oakley - Oakley has been trying really hard in school this week! Lots of different staff members have been commenting on how sensible he is being and how he is listening carefully to instructions. During our Road Safety assembly and in our visit from the local police this week, Oakley listened carefully and showed a keen interest in how to stay safe. Keep up the fantastic work, Oakley!
Fox - This week, we have been thinking carefully about how to stay safe on the roads, at home and at school. Fox is such a curious learner and asked some brilliant questions about this topic but also shared some great ideas too! Fox has also been working well with his friends in class this week too and has been having a good giggle- we just love your laugh and smile!
Year 2
Ellie and Rares - for being real ambassadors for keeping themselves and others safe. They are always keen to make sure that the classroom and playground is kept tidy and safe from hazards. They are both extremely knowledgeable about how to keep themselves safe outside of school, including understanding Stranger Danger, On-line Safety and Road Safety. They also watch out for the mental health of others, asking people how they are, how they can help, offering a friendly smile and a hug whenever someone needs one.
Year 3
Ottavia - As a digital leader in school, Ottavia shows great passion when talking about online safety. She also takes great care of computing equipment in school, carefully plugging IPads back in the trolley to ensure that they are not damaged. Keep it up!
Oscar - Oscar regularly ensures that school is a safe place for everyone. We have witnessed him opening doors and holding them to ensure that others can enter/exit school safely. He can share ideas about how to make school a safe environment and goes above and beyond to make this happen.
Year 4
Evie – for sharing excellent suggestions about how to keep safe when it is dark. She told the class that drivers need to be able to see you even when you are walking.
Lily-Rose – for sharing excellent suggestions about how to keep pets safe when it is dark. She suggested putting a glow in the dark leash on the dog when you walk at night.
Year 5
Katie - Katie is a kind and thoughtful member of the class; she always looks out for other children, making sure that they are happy and safe. Katie promotes 'being safe' on a daily basis. She makes sure that everyone in class is being safe and that everyone in school is being kept safe. She will tidy the classroom in order to remove any trip hazards and she will alert adults around school to any potential dangers. Keep up the good work Katie!
Sophia A - Sophia has a keen eye for safety and will alert adults in school to any potential dangers, making sure that everyone in school is being kept safe! Sophia is also able to suggest ways in which children can be kept safe in the classroom and outside on the playground. Her kind and caring nature shines through each and every day! Keep being you Sophia!
Year 6
Our week in school began with an assembly about safety where the children explored what this means and why it is so important. These discussions continued in our pupil voice sessions, where children shared ideas about how they can ensure their safety, and help to support that of others, when in school and when at home. This week's Stars of the Week in Year 6 have been chosen with this in mind.
Zara - Zara is a responsible member of the class who understands how important it is that she, and the people around her, are safe in school and when outside of the school grounds. She conducts herself in a way that helps to ensure the safety of herself and others and is pro-active in spotting and acting upon things that could pose a risk - for example, picking things up that have been dropped and ensuring that she tidies up after herself and others.
Sophie - Sophie engaged fully with our pupil voice discussions and shared some excellent ideas about how to promote safety in school. Sophie is a responsible member of the class who will tell an adult when she sees something that could cause injury to others and she activity promotes the safety and well-being of her peers by noticing things that could cause a hazard and acting upon this. She always ensures that her conduct in school means that she is safe - as are the people around her.
Headteacher Award
Each week in our Celebration Assembly, Mrs Powell chooses someone who has really impressed her during the week and presents them with her Headteacher Award trophy.
We are always on the lookout for those children who go out of their way to ensure that they keep others safe and look out for others in their actions. This week’s Superstar Award goes to this amazing Mayflower pupil who does this from the heart, thinks about how people feel, and tries to make the difference when she can. She looks after those in her class and all around school too.
Ella D, you even have the wonderful ability of making a positive difference to everyone’s day – thank you for always considering others before yourself and making a difference.
Makaton Sign Of The Week
The children are continuing to learn Makaton's 'Sign of the week' each week. Each Monday, the children learn the new sign for that week. We thought it would be useful to share the following week's sign with parents/carers on our Friday blog so you can get involved too if you wish. Please click on the link below to see the sign for the coming week.

School gates from Monday 25th November
We have been asked by First Steps Active Care, our wraparound and after school club provider, to lock both the South Avenue gate (the gate to the side of the upper school) and the Spring Gardens gate (the gate near the private stretch of road off South Avenue) after school has finished every afternoon. This is to ensure the safety of the children at the wraparound/after school provision when they go outside to take part in activities.
This will start from next Monday, 25th November and the gates will be locked as soon as all parents/carers and children have vacated the premises and by 3.30pm at the latest. Should you have a meeting with your child's teacher after school which is scheduled for after 3.30pm or need to collect your child from wraparound/after school club, you will need to enter the school grounds via the Station Road entrance.
When there are any events on after school such as film nights, discos, parents evenings etc all gates will remain open on these occasions.
Christmas Art Project
The Christmas Art Project orders were sent home with the children earlier this week. Please see the message below from Xmas4Schools.
Occasionally, when dealing with thousands of handwritten children’s names, a spelling mistake can occur. Our data is always double checked by a human and our error rate last year was 0.064%! If, however, you do receive an order with an incorrect spelling, please call your school office and they will speak to us to arrange reprocessing your order for you.
Year 1 Tuck Shop every Tuesday in November
Don't forget that Year 1 are holding a tuck shop on the lower playground after school every Tuesday during November. This is to raise funds to go towards their visit to Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery in December. Year 1 would really appreciate it if you could spare a few moments to visit the tuck shop to support them.
Year 3/4 PTA Film Night Thursday 28th November
Don't forget that if you would like your child to take part in the Year 3/4 film night which takes place next Thursday, please return their completed slip and £3 entry fee to your child's teacher by no later than Monday 25th November.
The film being shown at this event is Home Alone (PG Certificate).
NO LATE REPLY SLIPS CAN BE ACCEPTED
Nativity Performances
If your child is in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 and you haven't yet returned your reply slip for tickets to the nativity performances, please make sure these are returned to school at the beginning of next week to secure your tickets.
The children are working really hard learning their lines and all the songs for their performances - you are in for a real treat!
Is your child a HERO?
During week commencing 2nd December we will be having a real push on encouraging all children to be Here, Every day, Ready and On time. Every child who arrives on time for school every day during that week will be entered into a prize draw, with a chance to win a movie night hamper for the whole family to enjoy.
We hope everyone is up for this challenge and will remind everyone again on next Friday's blog.
Milk in school
Our Nursery and Reception children receive free milk in school until they reach the age of 5. Once 5 years old, the children can still have milk but there is a small charge payable to Cool Milk, our milk provider, for this.
If your child is currently in Reception, please read the letter below from Cool Milk to find out the next steps should you wish your child to continue receiving milk in school after their 5th birthday. Similarly if your child is in Year 1 and above and would like to start having milk in school, please visit the Cool Milk website using one of the methods below to register your child. Please be advised it can take up to 2 weeks from registration until your child starts receiving milk, as Cool Milk will need to notify our local dairy.
Christmas Chocolate Raffle
Over the last couple of years, our Chocolate Raffle held in the run up to Christmas has proved extremely popular. We would like to run this again this year and would like to ask for donations of chocolate goodies to be brought into school from Monday 25th November onwards. Please don't worry if you are not able to contribute at this time - we appreciate that things are difficult at the moment and there is no pressure at all to donate anything.
Raffle tickets will be on sale from Monday 2nd December, priced at £1 per strip of 5 tickets. Tickets will be available in each class and also from the school office before and after school each day (with the exception of a Tuesday afternoon, when the school office is closed).
The raffle will be drawn during the school day on Friday 20th December, the last day of this term.
Good luck everyone!
Christmas Market in school Monday 16th December from 2pm
We are really excited in school to be underway with our preparations for our Christmas Market which will take place on Monday 16th December from 2pm. The market will be the culmination of our Enterprise project. Our PTA has given each class a small sum of money which they will use to buy resources to make items which they will then sell at the Christmas Market.
Whatever profit each class makes will be theirs to keep to use during the school year on something extra for their class.
We would like to invite parents/carers/extended family members into school from 2pm on Monday 16th December to view and hopefully purchase the items the children have made. Some of the suggestions have been really creative so we are looking forward to seeing the finished products.
We hope as many of you as possible can join us. Please come to the school office and the office staff will direct you to where you need to go.
If you will be attending this event, you will be able to take your child home once you have finished at the event even if this is before the end of the school day. Your child will just need to be signed out by a member of staff before leaving.
Our Ambassadors
In school, some of our children have been chosen to be Ambassadors for different subjects/areas. Our Ambassadors represent our other children in sharing ideas and helping Mrs Powell and our staff subject leaders to always make sure that the children's views are taken into account when planning future learning and looking after the health and well being of the children. Of course, the children are always at the front of everything we do here at Mayflower and our Ambassadors are proving to be fantastic advocates for themselves and their peers.
We wanted to share with everyone who our Ambassadors are in school.
