Half Term Message from Mrs Powell

Dear Mayflower families,

I cannot believe that I am writing this at the end of the first half term as it feels that it has gone so quickly! It has been a very busy half term for many reasons, and I do miss being able to head out as much as I can in the mornings and at the end of the day. What has been wonderful, as always, are the greetings from the children who know I’d much rather be spending time with them reading books, watching them create amazing art or watching how they interact and help each other when they are happy or when they are sad (rather than being in lots of meetings or sat at my computer).

We have had a wonderful spelling bee, #helloyellow day and Harvest service in the last few weeks and this has showcased how resilient, confident and amazing they are in supporting each other!

We are also pleased to report that our attendance data is currently above national figures for the year too. This is fantastic news as this means that our children are accessing more learning opportunities here each week.

The team had changed yet again from July and this half term has seen the return of some familiar faces such as Mrs Birkinshaw in Year 1 and Mrs Parkes in Year 3. It has been lovely to see the Team Mayflower bloom over the last 8 weeks and settle back into their own routines.

At our Harvest Service last week, Rev Liz and Tony spoke about focusing on ‘giving thanks’ and the children were really articulate in what they were truly grateful for in the world and this week we extended this into discussions around ‘the rights of a child’. Our stars of the week really demonstrate the power in voice they have around justice and equality. Please read them below.

We continue to believe in the importance that our families work together with school and give support to each other in all the challenges that we may face. The door to school is always open, and granted the school year journey is one where we may at times hit bumps in the road; however if you need to discuss any concerns about the most important people here - the children - the class teachers foremost, the amazing other adults in school and I are always here to listen.

Have a wonderful half-term break with your families.

Mrs Powell

Attendance

Every week in our Celebration Assembly, we celebrate the class who has achieved the highest attendance for that week. This week Mrs Fuller's class had the highest attendance with 97.85% - well done Reception!

Stars of the week

Each week in our Friday Celebration Assembly, we celebrate our stars of the week. Each class teacher chooses 2 children from their class each week who have really impressed them. Here are the children who have been chosen this week.

Nursery & Reception

Ronnie in Nursery has been our superstar this week. He has started to show increased confidence in the classroom and is offering his ideas and thoughts more readily in our carpet time. He has shown kindness to his friends and done his best to make the adults in the classroom proud of him.

Our Reception superstar this week is Scarlett, she always considers other children in the class. Scarlett is a kind and caring girl who looks out for her friends, makes sure they are happy and helps them when they are hurt. Scarlett makes sure to follow the school rules and guides other children in the class to do the same. Well done Scarlett!

Year 1

Georgia - This week we have been thinking about 'The Rights of a Child' and those who fight for other's rights. Georgia is a shining example of this. She is so kind to everybody in school and includes everyone in all activities. She understands that everybody is different but that everybody should be treated equally. We are so lucky to have Georgia in our class!

Luke - Luke has really been trying to listen carefully and has been joining in with activities and discussions fantastically. He had some excellent ideas on the importance of our equal rights. Luke has been working hard in lots of lessons this week and sharing his wonderful knowledge. You are a super star, Luke!

Year 2

Mia, Max and Evie - for being great ambassadors in our class for promoting the Rights of a child. They have provided the class with a wonderful "Worry Monster" box which other members of the class use effectively to share any worries with their teacher. They have been able to find solutions to some of the problems, suggesting the best way to support and reassure others. Thank you all for being so kind and caring.

Year 3

Phoebe - Phoebe is a determined and hard working member of the class. She always supports her peers and is respectful to everyone. Phoebe always fights for the rights of others and if she feels something is unjust, she seeks advice from adults to make the situation right. Phoebe is an excellent role model to her peers.

Oscar S - As a well-being ambassador, Oscar is always looking for ways to help others. He supports anyone who is upset or needs a friend. Oscar wrote an excellent letter in his Jigsaw lesson this week that showed his high levels of empathy and how he wants to make school an inclusive place for all.

Year 4

Evelyn & Edward - for being super kind caring friends to others. They are always looking out for children who need support and are always happy to help them without an adult asking.

Year 5

'Those who fight for the rights of others’

Sophia B and Elizabeth are the Year 5 'Wellbeing Ambassadors'.

Each day these two children provide peer support and share strategies with their peers to help them to manage and reduce stress. They work really hard to raise awareness of mental health problems and promote positive mental health.

Sophia B always considers the feelings of others; often putting others before herself. She sees things from other people's point of view and will thoughtfully listen to other people's thoughts and opinions. She is a fantastic role model and friend to her peers.

Elizabeth is really good at listening to what others have to say. People often tell her about their problems, and she willingly offers support and guidance to them. Elizabeth is good at picking up on how other people are feeling and will offer comfort and support to those who need it. Elizabeth is a lovely friend to all.

Year 6

This week in school, we have been learning about the UN Rights of the Child. The adults across school have been looking out for those children across school who actively promote this, ensuring that these rights are met for all children. This week's Stars of the Week in Year 6 have been chosen with this in mind.

Ava B - Ava actively promotes many of these rights through school. She knows that a 'right to education' is one of the rights of a child, and she shows that she appreciates this right by making the most of absolutely every learning opportunity, inside and outside of the classroom.  She always behaves in a way that ensures that other children can access this right, supporting others whenever they need it. Ava embodies our school rules at all times and is an excellent ambassador for them. She has had an amazing first half term in year 6, culminating in completing her grid of recognition and winning the Y6 Spelling Bee.

Cohen - Cohen actively promotes many of these rights through school and is an excellent ambassador for them. He knows that the right to expression is an important right for all children, and he ensures that the contributions of all are listened to, valued and appreciated. When working with others, he listens to the thoughts and opinions of all members of his group and during games at playtime, he always works to ensure fairness and equality, standing up for the rights of others when they may not do this for themselves. Cohen has had a fantastic first half term in Year 6 and should be very proud of himself.

Headteacher Award

Each week in our Celebration Assembly, Mrs Powell chooses someone who has really impressed her during the week and presents them with her Headteacher Award trophy.

This week’s Superstar Award goes to this amazing Mayflower pupil who is always caring for others, thinks about how people feel, and tries to make the difference when he can. He looks after those in his class and all around school too. You even have the wonderful ability of making a positive difference to everyone’s day – thank you Joseph for always (without even having to think about it!) supporting the rights of every child in school and making a difference.

Makaton Sign Of The Week

The children are continuing to learn Makaton's 'Sign of the week' each week. Each Monday, the children learn the new sign for that week. We thought it would be useful to share the following week's sign with parents/carers on our Friday blog so you can get involved too if you wish. Please click on the link below to see the sign for the coming week.

Christmas Design Project

The Christmas Design Project artwork was sent off to Xmas4Schools on Monday evening. We have received confirmation that the company has received this, so they are now busy scanning all the artwork in. Once this is done, they will open the ordering window to enable parents/carers to order products with their child's artwork on.

Any communication we receive from Xmas4Schools either today or after half term will be forwarded on to parents/carers. It may be that you will receive an email/text (depending on what information you have provided on your order form) during half term to notify you that the ordering window is open.

The deadline for ordering products with Xmas4Schools is Friday 8th November at the very latest.

Secondary applications for September 2025

If your child is in Year 6 and you haven't yet made an application for their Secondary School place for September 2025, please remember that the deadline to do so is 31st October 2024.

The link to the Doncaster Council Admissions page has been provided on previous weeks blogs. If you do not live in the Doncaster Local Authority, please apply through your own Local Authority's Admissions Team.

Parking safely and respectfully around school

We have been contacted this week by residents from Spring Gardens. The residents have notified us that Spring Gardens is a private road and, as such, parents/carers shouldn't be parking there. Residents have reported not being able to get down the street and not being able to park in front of their own properties.

We appreciate that parking isn't the best in the streets surrounding school; however, we would ask those that drive to park safely and respectfully please. Thank you for your support with this.

Parents Evening & School Spider

We are currently working with School Spider, our website provider, to activate part of their system to enable parents/carers to book parents evening appointments. The process is taking longer than we anticipated, but we will be in touch with parents/carers during the first week back with further information on how to download the app and how to book parents evening appointments. As a reminder, parents evening is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 13th November.

Flu Vaccinations

The Vaccination Team came into school yesterday to administer the flu vaccinations to children from Reception to Year 6. If your child was absent or you didn't consent in time for them to have the vaccination, the nurses will be back in school on Thursday 21st November for a catch up session.

Poppy Appeal 2024

We will again be raising funds for The Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal. We have had some poppies and other items (bracelets, stationery items etc) delivered to school this week. These will be available for the children to purchase during the first week back after half term. The suggested donation for each item is £1; however, all donations will be most greatfully received.

Year 4 & Year 6 residentials

We are currently in the process of planning our Year 4 residential to Hollowford and our Year 6 residential to London. An email has been sent out regarding the deposit required for the Year 6 residential. Letters regarding both visits will be sent out in the first week back after half term.

Spelling Bee

Children from Year 1 to Year 6 were invited to take part in a Spelling Bee this half term. All the children were given spellings to learn at the end of the summer term and again at the beginning of this school year. These spellings were based on the statutory spellings relevant to each year group.

The first round was a written round in the classroom. Each child was given 5 words to spell. If they got them all right, they went through to the next round.

The spoken round took place this week. The children were asked to spell words from a list in turn. Those that spelt a work incorrectly sat down until there was only one person left standing and this person was the winner.

Congratulations to all the finalists - you all did amazingly well. Huge congratulations to the eventual winners, who are listed below.

Year 1 - Georgia

Year 2 - Connor

Year 3 - Tommy

Year 4 - Daniel

Year 5 - Harry

Year 6 - Ava B

The Year 5 and Year 6 finalists and winners will have the opportunity to take part in the Hill House Spelling Bee later in the school year, along with children from other schools throughout Doncaster and pupils from Hill House. Our children have taken part in this for the last couple of years and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Enterprise Event & Christmas Market

With the support of our wonderful PTA, we will be holding an Enterprise event in school next half term. The PTA will be donating a specific amount of money per class to enable the children to make some products to sell. We will then be holding a Christmas Market on the afternoon of Monday 16th December, where families will be invited into school to look at and purchase the items that the children have made.

We would also like to open up this event to 5 independent sellers. If you would be interested in having a stall at this market, please contact Jenni Dolby, our PTA chair, via the PTA's Facebook page to discuss further.

All proceeds made from the sale of the children's products will go to help our PTA to provide additional resources and experiences for our children.

BBC 500 Words

The BBC are running their annual competition '500 Words', where children are invited to write a story of no more than 500 words. The purpose of the 500 Words competition is to encourage children aged 5 to 11 to write a story that they would love to read.

Miss Dunn has started a 500 Words club on a Wednesday lunchtime and all the children had the opportunity to take part. The children taking part have been working really hard on their stories over the last couple of weeks. Miss Dunn will be submitting any completed entries on Friday 8th November.

If your child would like their story to be entered into the competition, could they please finish them over half term and then hand them to Miss Dunn during the first week back.

We look forward to reading their fantastic stories.

Christmas Shoebox Appeal

Quick reminder that the deadline for the Christmas Shoebox Appeal filled shoeboxes to be back in school is Friday 8th November please. If you would like to take part but haven't yet picked up a leaflet, these are still available from the school office.

Thank you to those who have already collected a leaflet/have handed in a wrapped, filled shoebox. We are beginning to get a lovely stack of them in the main entrance. Your support is very much appreciated.

Bag2School Clothing Collection

As advised, our PTA has organised the first Bag2School clothing collection of this school year and this will take place on Tuesday 12th November.

Please click on the link below to check what Bag2School accept in their clothing collections.

https://bag2school.com/what-we-collect

If you have any of the items detailed which you would like to get rid of and donate, the children should have brought home an empty bag this week. If you don't have one of the Bag2School bags, a black bag will do absolutely fine.

Please bring your filled bags to school on Tuesday 12th November and leave them in front of the building outside our Foundation classroom, on the patch of grass opposite the shed. There will already be some bags in that area by the time parents/carers start arriving, so it will be obvious where they need to be left.

Bag2School will weigh the bags and our PTA will receive payment dependent on the total weight of all the bags. We will share how much was raised on an upcoming blog.

Year 1 Tuck Shop after half term

Year 1 will be holding a tuck shop on the lower playground after school every Tuesday during November. This is to raise funds to go towards their visit to Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery in December. Year 1 would really appreciate it if you could spare a few moments to visit the tuck shop to support them.

Year 6 Brass Lessons

Mr Latimer, the brass tutor who comes to school every Friday to work with the Year 6 children, commented recently that the current Year 6 class is the best class he has ever had at any school. Mr Latimer said that the children are attentive, always listening and are really progressing well with their chosen instruments. This has already been passed on to the Year 6 children and Miss Dunn, but we wanted to share this with our wider school community. Well done Year 6!

Mr Latimer will be taking part in a concert with Doncaster Concert Band next Saturday, 2nd November at 7pm at McAuley Lower School. If anyone is interested in attending, please click on the link below for further details. Tickets can be purchased on the door on the night.

Asda Rewards - School Cashpot

If you shop at Asda and have the Asda Rewards app, we are hoping you can take a few moments to help us please. Could you please add our school to your app so that we can top up our own Cashpot. When you shop with Asda, Asda will donate 0.5% of the total spend each time to our school. This is additional to your own earnings and doesn't take anything out of your Cashpot.

Thank you in advance for your support with this.

The total rewards collected currently stands at £395, which is amazing!!

There is just over a month left to go, so if you haven't yet downloaded the Asda Rewards app and would like to support school, there is still time to do so.

Halloween Dinnertime Fun!

Thank you so much to our catering team Mrs Stanfield and Mr Skeldon, who went above and beyond to provide some Halloween fun this lunchtime. Mrs Stanfield dressed up and the serving area where the children collect their meals was decorated for Halloween. Mrs Stanfield decorated the top of the buns with some Halloween decorations too.

The children absolutely loved it and showed their appreciation to Mrs Stanfield and Mr Skeldon. Thank you for what you always do for our children and thank you for adding some fun to the last lunch before half term. We are really lucky to have you both as part of our school and we want you to know that we appreciate all you do for the staff and children here at Mayflower

There will also be a reminder of the menu for the following week on our weekly blog on our website and this is published every Friday afternoon.
