Arriving on time for school
We thought it would be useful to provide a reminder of the start times for school, as we have had a significant increase in children arriving late for school recently. The doors open at 8.35am for a prompt 8.40am start. When children arrive late, they are missing out on learning and also then disrupt the learning of the other children when they go into class.
We appreciate that being late is sometimes unavoidable, for example if there is a road traffic accident on the route to school etc, but we are finding that the same number of pupils are arriving at school late each week.
As always, if there is anything that you would like to discuss in relation to your child's attendance please don't hesitate to call in at the school office to arrange to speak with Mrs Powell.
Stars of the week
Each week in our Friday Celebration Assembly, we celebrate our stars of the week. Each class teacher chooses 2 children from their class each week who have really impressed them. Here are the children who have been chosen this week.
Nursery & Reception
The star of the week in Nursery is Ivy. She has really impressed us with how she is trying to do her best listening. She is showing improved focus in our group activities and doing her best to follow the instructions and do what is asked of her. Well done Ivy, you can be very proud of yourself.
This week Milo and Conell in Reception have been super stars in phonics. They have been ready to learn and have done some fantastic listening. Both have tried their best even when they found it a little more difficult and kept going until they achieved making their words during phonics lessons. They have both used their phonics skills in their writing this week, remembering to use their Fred fingers to help them when writing down words. Conell and Milo have both been really proud of their achievements this week, well done 🙂
Year 1
Darcy - Darcy has had a super week. She has put an incredible amount of effort into her work and has been showing a great deal of respect to staff during carpet time. She has been one of the first children to get started on most activities this week and has produced some lovely work! Hard work and great listening have helped Darcy to achieve wonderful things! Well done.
Fox - Fox has had a wonderful start to the half term. He has impressed the Year 1 staff but also the dinnertime staff have been praising his beautiful manners all week. They have loved seeing Fox clapping and being happy for his friends when they have achieved awards and stickers. Being a good friend is your achievement this week, Fox! Well done!
Year 2
Reuben - Although he often lacks confidence in his own abilities in maths, Reuben has tried his very best, overcome his fears and been determined to be fabulous at fractions! Amazing achievement, Reuben!
Evie - for being determined to do her very best in all her work this week and achieving some amazing results. Not only has she conquered fractions but she has used her Fred sounds to write amazing statements, questions, commands and exclamations! Well done, Evie.
Year 3
Noah D - I am so impressed with Noah's positive attitude towards learning. He is dedicating time and effort to ensuring his handwriting is joined and legible and the progress he has made with this is amazing. In writing lessons, I have seen Noah push himself to achieve to the best of his ability - one of the many reasons why he is a writing ambassador. In all areas of learning, I have seen Noah shine this week. Keep it up.
Tommy - Tommy is so determined to learn and achieve to the best of his ability. He is a positive role model to all and I am so lucky to have him as a member of the Year 3 class. Tommy is a shining example of doing things the Mayflower way. He is self-aware as a learner and knows how to push himself and support himself to achieve.
Year 4
Skaila-Mai - Skaila has had a fantastic first week at Bawtry Mayflower - it is like she has been here forever! She is a kind, polite and respectful child and has a smile that lights up the room. She has settled in well and already started to form some lovely friendships. Keep it up.
Edward - Edward always pushes himself and achieves to the best of his ability. He is always ready to learn and shows high levels of respect to all adults. It has been lovely to teach Edward this week and he has really made me smile. Keep it up.
Year 5
Savana has had an amazing first week back. She works hard in every lesson and shows real determination to improve her learning. Savana is always polite and well-mannered and she is an excellent role model for other children. Well done Savana, keep up the hard work!
Seth comes to school each day with a smile on his face and a positive, 'can-do' attitude. He understands that hard work leads to success and recognises that each day is an opportunity to be better and to do better and he pushes himself to do just that. Keep it up!
Year 6
Our focus this week through school, has been on one of our core values: achievement. We have been noticing, in particular, those children who work hard in every lesson in order to achieve the very best that they can. This week's Stars of the Week in Year 6 have been chosen with that in mind.
Adomas - Adomas has pushed himself this week to work as hard as he can in all subjects across the curriculum so that he can produce work to a high standard. He has worked well independently and when collaborating with others, taking the time to explain concepts and ideas to his partners. Well done, Adomas - keep it up.
Gracie-Mae - I have been so impressed with Gracie's attitude towards her learning this week; she has worked hard in lessons and been determined to complete all work set to a high standard, working well both independently and in collaboration with others. Well done, Gracie-Mae - keep it up.
Headteacher Award
Each week in our Celebration Assembly, Mrs Powell chooses someone who has really impressed her during the week and presents them with her Headteacher Award trophy.
This week’s Superstar Award goes to George in Year 6. Our theme this week was work hard to achieve! He has really shone in doing this every day this year, in and out of the classroom. He is the perfect role model for giving 100% effort in all areas of learning! Well done!
Makaton Sign Of The Week
The children are continuing to learn Makaton's 'Sign of the week' each week. Each Monday, the children learn the new sign for that week. We thought it would be useful to share the following week's sign with parents/carers on our Friday blog so you can get involved too if you wish. Please click on the link below to see the sign for the coming week.

World Book Day
This year, to celebrate World Book Day, we are planning a week of book-related activities for the children to enjoy. Letters should have come home with the children this week with further information about our World Book Day events.
On Monday 3rd March, we will be joined by the author Phil Sheppard.
On Tuesday 4th March, we will be holding the final of our school Danum Read Aloud competition. Our Key Stage 2 children have been invited to take part and those that are chosen will select their favourite from a selection of extracts available. They will then perform to Key Stage 2 and the winners will go through to the school final on Tuesday 4th March. The overall winner will then go through to the Doncaster final at Danum Museum and Art Gallery on 27th March.
On Wednesday 5th March, Boggledybook Children's Bookshop will be in school during the school day.
For our World Book Day celebrations on Friday 7th March, we would like the children to dress up as their favourite Roald Dahl character. There is no expectation for parents/carers to spend a significant amount of money on a costume for their child - please try and utilise what you have at home wherever possible.
Also on Friday 7th March, to round off our week of everything book-related, we would like to invite our families in for 'Breakfast with a book'. Parents and carers are invited in to school to share a special reading session with their children. Whether it's enjoying a book together, listening to your child read, or reading to them, immerse yourself in the joy of literacy while savouring a delightful breakfast. It's a wonderful opportunity to strengthen the bond through the magic of storytelling. Further details will follow regarding this.
For those with children in our lower and upper buildings, we would like parents/carers to collect their Foundation/KS1 child first and then go up to our upper hall to wait for their KS2 child.
Year 5 Residential meeting
There will be a parents meeting for the Year 5 residential on Monday 10th March. The meeting will take place straight after school and will be in the Year 5 classroom. Please wait on the upper playground for Mrs Pickersgill to let you into our upper building.
Easter Chocolate Raffle
We will once again be running our very popular Easter chocolate raffle in the run up to the Easter holidays. If you would like to donate any Easter eggs/chocolate etc, please bring your items to the school office.
Tickets will be on sale in the classrooms and from the school office from Monday 10th March, priced at £1 per strip of 5 tickets.
The raffle will be drawn on the last day of this half term, Friday 28th March, during the school day. All proceeds will go towards providing some extra opportunities for our children.
Kitchen Sink Science Fair Friday 14th March 2pm
Parents Evening
This term's parents evening will take place on Wednesday 19th March. The Year 6 and Reception appointments will be from 2pm and the rest of school will start straight after school finishes at 3.10pm. The appointments will take place in the lower hall and there will be food available, so please go up and see Mrs Stanfield to enjoy some of her delicious cooking while you're waiting for your appointment slot.
Bookings will be open on School Spider from 9am next Wednesday, 5th March. Slots do fill up really quickly, so please ensure you book as soon as the appointments become live to get your preferred time slot.
If you have any problems booking an appointment, please contact the school office.
If you have separate meetings for your child with their class teacher, due to them having a support plan in place, you won't need to book a parents evening appointment for 19th March.
Poetry Recital
Miss Dunn recently organised a poetry recital for Wellbeing Week. The children were tasked with writing a poem describing their emotions. Some of the children were chosen to read their poems out in assembly.
Cohen - I was very nervous because I had to read my poem out in front of the whole school., but I enjoyed it.
Rose - I was nervous but I enjoyed the practising and reading it at the end was fun. I really enjoyed creating and writing the poem.
Bella - I was very nervous too because I hate public speaking. I enjoyed writing it and performing it.
Lots Of Socks Day Friday 21st March
On Friday 21st March, we would like the children to wear some socks that will get them noticed to help us to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day. They might be mismatched socks or very bright socks - whatever you child would like to wear along with their normal school uniform.
Junior Bake Off
Bawtry Arts Festival 2025
Thank you to those parents/carers who provided some feedback to the Bawtry Arts Festival committee members when they joined us this week. If you didn't get chance to speak to the committee and would like to provide any feedback on the following questions or about the Festival in general, please email rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk
This year will be the fourth Bawtry Festival taking place from Monday 16th to Sunday 22nd June. We are continuing to improve & develop the event to cater for ALL age groups by engaging with the local community as much as possible. We would be very interested in finding out your views as parents of children at the Mayflower School. Possibly also as parents of children at Senior Schools as well. If you could let us know your thoughts on the questions below it would be much appreciated.
- Do you believe that the festival is good for the town, and what general improvements would you like to see?
- Are there any particular type of ‘arts’ related activities/ events that you would like to see at this year’s festival either for yourselves or for the children to take part in?
- For outdoor activities on the main (Sunday) day of the festival we have a budget to purchase some large toys/games for children and young people. Any suggestions as to what would create interest?
Congratulations!
Max in Year 2 is becoming a regular on our weekly blogs, due to his amazing achievements in swimming! This time, Max has received his Stage 10 swimming certificate. Wow! What a superstar you are Max. All your hard work is definitely paying off. Keep up the hard work and we're sure it won't be long before we're sharing your next achievement!
Last weekend Olivia, Lilly and Gracie-Leigh competed in their third competition at the Scorpion 121 at Barnsley Metrodome. Lilly was first to compete and won both her matches. Next up was Gracie-Leigh, who put in a very controlled performance scoring some amazing shots to take away a trophy. Last to compete was Olivia who won both matches. Olivia's second match was a much tougher match and thrilling to watch.
What is most impressive is that the girls have had 11 matches between them and won all 11 in three competitions, which is amazing. They should all be so proud.
The girls all train at Bawtry Scorpion Taekwondo. Classes are Wednesday & Friday at 5.15 - 6.15. The first 2 weeks are FREE.
