Proposed strike action
The commitment to the children here at Bawtry Mayflower remains as high as ever and any decisions that staff have / will make in terms of strike action will not be taken lightly. I would like to update you in light of this that there are no planned closures / partial closures for the remaining strike dates at this current time.
After School Clubs for after Easter
The letters for the next lot of after school clubs, which will start after Easter, should have come home with the children tonight. The deadline for the slips to be returned is next Wednesday 8th March. All children who return their slips by next Wednesday will have an equal chance of being allocated a place on a club; however, there are limited spaces so it may be the case that not all children will get a place on their chosen club.
If your child is in Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6) the reply slip MUST be fully completed, especially the section which asks whether your child will be collected or will be walking home. If this section is not fully complete, the slip will be returned home with your child and they will only be considered for a club when the slip is returned correctly completed.
Emails advising you as to whether your child has secured a place on their chosen club or not will be sent out by Friday 17th March. The payment items for the clubs will then be added to ParentPay on Monday 20th March, allowing you to pay for the clubs between 20th March and the end of the Easter holidays. Please ensure that payment is made by the end of the Easter holidays ready for the clubs starting on the first week back.

News from Year 5/6
Last Friday, the children in Years 5 and 6 visited York’s Chocolate Story. They had a fun-filled, action-packed day which involved a tour of the chocolate factory; a workshop to learn about how the Ancient Maya made a bitter drink from cacao nibs called xocolatl and an opportunity to make their own chocolate lollypops. There was also lots of ‘essential sampling’ of chocolate throughout the day!
During the workshop, children followed a similar process to the Ancient Maya to make their own version of xocolatl. The first stage in the process was to work collaboratively to grind cacao nibs. (This was very tricky and unlike the Maya who used to grind them for 18 hours, we only ground them for 10 minutes!) We then added cocoa powder. The next stage in the process was to add water and then we used a special technique used by the Ancient Maya to make the drink bubbly – we had to pour from one jug to another jug repeatedly, whilst lifting and lowering the jugs to make lots of bubbles appear. The groups then chose whether to use vanilla, honey or chilli to flavour their drink before then sampling it – it was not quite as delicious as the hot chocolate that we are used to!
Here we are making our xocolatl drinks and learning more about the Ancient Maya.
News from Year 3/4
On Monday, Mrs Wood's class led an assembly and invited their parents/carers in to school to share this with them. Their assembly was called Our Favourite Things and some children showed some examples of work that they had done in class and talked about what they had enjoyed.
On Tuesday, Year 3/4 went on their visit to Magna. Whilst there, the children took part in a workshop where we learnt about the importance of clean water. We were shown how diseases can spread through sharing the water. From this we then created our own water filters to attempt to clean some dirty water. They actually worked!
We watched the Big Melt and learnt how the steel was melted and then used in making new things.
While exploring the pavilions, we made clouds, learnt about the power of wind and water and saw a fire tornado, as well as many other amazing things.
We all really enjoyed our day there.
It has been a really busy week for Year 3/4, as on Wednesday some of the children took part in a Dodgeball competition at another school. The children did brilliantly and their team spirit shone through as always. Bawtry 1 finished 4th and Bawtry 2 came runners-up! Elsie and Brandon were awarded medals as the team players for enthusiasm and skill.
We are looking forward to entering some more competitions soon, so watch this space!
World Book Day
Yesterday was World Book Day. The children were invited to come to school in their pyjamas and bring along a teddy and their favourite bedtime story to share with their friends. During the day, the children were able to choose which member of staff they would like to read them a story and children from across school then got together to listen to the story. In the afternoon, the children took part in the Masked Reader competition, where they had to try and guess which member of staff was reading each story. Some of the staff made it really difficult for the children to guess, but they had great fun guessing!
Please click on the arrows at the side of the blog image at the top of this page for some photos from World Book Day.
Congratulations!
Phoebe in Year 1 was recently awarded with her Stage 3 swimming certificate. Wow Phoebe, what a fantastic achievement! You must really love your swimming and be trying very, very hard in each lesson. Well done!
