Stars of the week
Each week in our Friday Celebration Assembly, we celebrate our stars of the week. Each class teacher chooses 2 children from their class each week who have really impressed them.
Here are this week's stars:
Foundation
Hugo for trying really hard with his listening skills.
Jacob for working really hard at his writing.
1/2A Mrs Davies
Olivia for being a super organised and very bossy soldier in the nativity and stepping in when we needed someone to do extra lines.
Tommy for learning all his lines for the nativity, knowing exactly where he needed to be and being the best down-trodden Joseph ever!
Evelyn for being the best, rather bossy Mary in our school nativity. She learnt her lines, knew exactly where to be and when and reminded everyone of their lines and actions to all the songs. She was amazing!
1/2B Miss Cruickshanks
James B for being the most respectful child all day every day and for always thinking of others feelings alongside his own.
Noah D for your hardworking attitude in RWI all week. I have been super impressed hearing the progression you are making with your reading. Keep it up!
1/2C Mrs Birkinshaw/Mrs Taylor
Natalie for always having a smile on her face and for trying really hard in all subjects.
Florence for excellent effort in her phonics and writing.
3/4A Mrs Wood
Tee-Jay has had a superb week in school this week. He has worked hard in every lesson and has always been on hand to do jobs sensibly! Fantastic!
Ava has worked incredibly hard in class this week. She has helped other children and has shown a really mature attitude! Ava seemed to know how to help Mrs Wood before Mrs Wood knew she needed help! Thank you!
3/4B Mrs Perry
Jace for showing a mature, responsible and respectful attitude towards his learning and the staff in 3/4. It has been noticed. Well done Jace.
Charlie for working hard to improve his learning both at home and school. Keep it up Charlie.
5/6A Miss Dunn
Harry - Harry has had a really positive attitude to his learning this week. He has exemplified all of the school rules and put 100% effort into all learning activities. It has been a real pleasure to see Harry work so hard this week.
Aria - Aria has embodied our school rules at all times this week. She has worked hard to learn new concepts and to apply her knowledge in all areas of the curriculum. She has put 100% effort into all learning activities and has really made me smile.
5/6B Mrs Pickersgill/Mrs Walker
Zak for his conscientious attitude towards all aspects of his learning.
Evie, Aimee and Lucy for always putting a smile on all staff members faces, always being polite and always being willing to help.
PTA Christmas Disco
Thank you to our PTA for organising the discos last night. The children had a fantastic time. We are so lucky to have such a supportive group to hold events like this for our children. A great big thank you to our staff too, who stayed at the discos with the children. Without everyone working together we would not be able to have events like these in school and we are really grateful for everyone's support.
Panto
On Wednesday this week, we surprised our Reception to Year 6 children with a panto! It was Aladdin and was performed by Chaplins Panto Company. They were absolutely fantastic and the children thoroughly enjoyed it. There was lots of opportunity for the children to get involved and we would like to thank our wonderful PTA who paid for this to take place.
Author visit
Yesterday, our Key Stage 2 children were really lucky to have a visit from the amazing author Peter J Murray. Peter is the author of the popular Mokee Joe series and the chilling Bonebreaker trilogy. Peter has won many awards and has visited our school before. His debut novel, Mokee Joe is Coming! was the winner of the 'Sheffield Children’s Book Award' in the shorter novel category. Bonebreaker was voted as the 'Bedfordshire Children’s Book of the Year' and Scabbajack, Peter’s seventh book, recently won the 'Stockton Children’s Book Award.'
Yesterday, Peter introduced the children to two of his latest books, Ten O' Clock Caller (a short story collection) and Scabbajack (Victorian theme). Both books are bone chilling and ideal for KS2. Peter came back this afternoon to do a book signing for the children.
Chocolate Raffle next week
We thought it would be a nice idea to hold a chocolate raffle in school next week, as it's our last week before Christmas. We would like to ask staff and parents/carers to donate any chocolate items for the raffle please. If you are able to donate, please either send the items in with your child or bring them to the school office next week.
The raffle tickets will cost £1 per strip of 5 tickets and raffle tickets will be on sale in the classrooms from next Monday, 12th December. The raffle will be drawn in our final celebration assembly of this term next Friday morning.
All proceeds will go towards the whole school drumming workshop which will take place on Tuesday 17th January.
Christmas Service Monday 12th December
Thank you to those who have volunteered to join us and walk to the church and back with the children for our Christmas service next Monday, 12th December. Please come to the school office once your child is in their class on Monday.
Bag2School clothing collection Tuesday 13th December
Next Tuesday, 13th December is the next PTA Bag2School clothing collection. Bag2School is a company who will collect any unwanted, good quality items for re-use. They will weigh the items received and we will receive a payment based on the amount of clothes donated. Your child should have brought home an information leaflet and empty bag this week, to enable you to fill the bag with any items you may wish to donate.
Please click on the link below to see what items can be included in the bags for donation.
https://bag2school.com/what-we-collect
If you do have any items to donate, please bring the filled bags to school either next Monday 12th December after school or first thing on Tuesday 13th December and put them inbetween the tree stump and the willow tree at the front of the school building (in front of where our Foundation stage classroom is). Bag2School usually come and collect the bags at the start of the school day.
Carols round the tree Weds 14th December
Following on from our email earlier this week, we would like to invite parents/carers and other family members to our Carols Round The Tree event next Wednesday, 14th December straight after school. For those who haven't been to one of these events before, we all get together in our lower hall to sing Christmas songs & carols. Refreshments will also be served at the event.
If you would like to join us, please come to the school office straight after school next Wednesday. We look forward to seeing you all there.
PTA Christmas Shop Thursday 15th December
Our PTA's Christmas Shop takes place next Thursday, 15th December during school time- please see the poster below for details.
If you wish your child to take part, please send them with some money in a purse/wallet or envelope with their name on it next Thursday. Unfortunately, the school office no longer have any cash at all, so will not be able to split notes for siblings or provide any money in the case of children forgetting their purse/wallet.
It would also be helpful if those that wish to take part remembered to bring their money next Thursday morning please, as we cannot guarantee that any money brought into the office after the start of the school day will get to your child's class in time for them to attend the shop.
Christmas Jumper Day Friday 16th December
Next Friday, 16th December is our Christmas Jumper Day. We would like the children to come in their Christmas jumper next Friday - they don't have to wear school uniform that day. Please don't worry if they don't have a Christmas jumper or don't want to wear one, they can just wear non-uniform that day.
No guitars Friday 16th December
Unfortunately, Miss Hill won't be able to come into school next Friday due to staff training with the Music Hub. She will come into school on another day before the end of the school year to make up for this missed session. We will give parents/carers plenty of notice of when this rearranged session will be.
Poppy Appeal 2022
The Royal British Legion has been in touch with us to thank us for our very generous donations during their recent Poppy Appeal. Bawtry Mayflower's donation this year was £402.94! This money will be put to very good use by the charity.
Cost of living winter booklet

News from Year 5/6
In Years 5 and 6, we have been learning about light and how we see. Mrs Davies (science leader in school) set us a challenge: Years 3 and 4 are going to be learning about this soon in their science lessons and we needed to create flipped learning teaching videos to introduce this concept to them.
Our videos needed to include the following elements:
- An explanation of what light is
- An explanation of how light travels
- Identification of light sources and non-light sources
- Information about how we see – using a human model/drama technique to exemplify.
We worked in small groups to research, plan and rehearse our teaching videos, before filming them and sending to Mrs Davies for her approval. We are looking forward to receiving our feedback.
News from Foundation
This week, the children in the Foundation Stage had an important visit from one of the nurses from the school nursing team. She came to talk to us about how important it is to look after our teeth and what we can do to make sure our teeth are clean and healthy! She even brought a set of large teeth in to show us and to demonstrate how best to clean them.
Congratulations!
James in Year 2 had a go at glass blowing recently. He made a bubble of glass that was so thin it isn't sharp and can be picked up by hand. He also added some gold and was allowed to take some real gold flakes home! The furnace and glass got to 1135 degrees Celsius and set a piece of paper alight just by touching it.
Evelyn in Year 5 and her younger sister Libby, who is in Year 1, have been very busy recently!
Evelyn has been working really hard to develop her stamina and technique in swimming. Last Sunday she confidently swam 50 metres on both her front and back to be awarded her distance badge. Her next challenge is life saving as she takes to the pool in her pyjamas this week. Her family are so proud of how committed Evelyn is to setting and smashing her own goals. Well done from everyone at Mayflower Evelyn!
Libby took park in a gymnastic competition. With careful effort she managed to win 2 gold medals, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Her family are so proud of her dedication, resilience and determination in gymnastics. Libby is always a huge encourager and supporter of fellow squad members too which makes her family extra proud of her achievements. Well done Libby - your team spirit shines through at school too, so well done!
Lily in Year 4 and her brother Jack in Year 3 passed their latest Martial Arts grading last night! They both received their yellow belts and certificates - well done to both of you, what a fantastic achievement!
It was a fabulous evening for those who take part in Martial Arts yesterday, as Vinnie in Year 4 also took part in his grading and received his green belt and certificate!
Vinnie, Jack and Lily's mums also took part in their Martial Arts gradings last night and were awarded with their latest belts (yellow with green tag) and certificates. Well done to you both too!
