Stars of the week

Each week in our Friday Celebration Assembly, we celebrate our stars of the week. Each class teacher chooses 2 children from their class each week who have really impressed them. Here are the children who have been chosen this week.

Nursery & Reception

Roman has been chosen as star of the week this week for Nursery. He has made a great start in school, he is really happy, and  comes into school with a smile on his face. He has started to make good relationships with the adults that he works with and is now settled in the classroom and enjoys the time that he spends with us.

This week in Reception we have chosen two superstars! Our first super star is Ada. She always has a lovely smile and loves to share her thoughts and ideas about our topic with others. Ada has been doing some fantastic writing this week about our World Book Day story. She has done this independently and kept on trying or had another go when she noticed that her full stops and finger spaces were missing. Ada was so proud of her work and shared this with her friends. Ada has also been a kind and caring friend helping other children with their writing when they have found it tricky. Well done 🙂

Our second superstar in Reception this week is Noah. Noah comes into school every morning with a sunny smile and gives big hugs to all of the adults which makes our day. Noah listens carefully and shares his knowledge and understanding of all of our different topics during lessons. This week Noah has been trying to do his writing independently even when he has found it a bit tricky. Noah is always polite and uses his manners when walking around school and at lunch time. Well done 🙂

Year 1

Holly and Skyla - This week we have chosen two wonderful new members of our class! They have settled in beautifully and are both impressing us with their love of learning, fabulous listening and their hard work. We are so pleased to have them join our class and we can't wait to see them grow!

Year 2

Connor - for being the most dedicated reader at home every week. He loves to read and share a book with a partner and with his parents. He is an absolute pleasure to hear read too. His expression and character voice are amazing. Well done Connor!

Daniel - for always loving a book! He takes great pleasure in reading and sharing a book. Everyone loves to listen to him read! He demonstrates his love for reading through his writing too. This week he has started to write an amazing story for our Maths Though Stories competition. Well done, Daniel.

Year 3

Tommy – Tommy is a super star. He consistently works hard and has a positive attitude towards all lessons. This week, he has produced an amazing character description of Mrs Twit and when performing it, he used intonation, showing his confidence as a reader. Tommy is making amazing progress – keep it up.

Isabella – This week, Isabella has pushed herself in writing. She has been working on interweaving dialogue with description. I am really impressed with her contributions in group discussions and the quality of work that she has produced. Well done you!

Year 4

Maddie S - Wow, wow, wow - I am so impressed with Maddie's positive attitude towards learning this week! She has come to school with a smile on her face and has pushed herself in all lessons. I have seen her produce some amazing writing this week and she has been a pleasure to teach. Keep it up Maddie.

Elliot - I have really enjoyed teaching Elliot this week. He is showing me his true potential and pushing himself to achieve. Elliot has really impressed me with how self-aware he is as a learner and is able to remain focused and avoid distractions. I have seen him excel in his maths learning and he has contributed well in discussions to further show his understanding.

Year 5

Oliver B and Oliwia are both avid readers,  who clearly have a real passion for reading. They have always got a book in their hand and show obvious enjoyment in reading, choosing a good range of appropriately challenging texts. “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Year 6

We have enjoyed the focus on reading this week whilst celebrating events linked to World Book Day. There are lots of children who are enthusiastic about books and reading in Y6 and it has been lovely to see them spread their enthusiasm this week. This week's Stars of the Week in Year 6 are as follows:

Thomas - Thomas reads all the time at home and it is a real pleasure to read the comments in his reading record each week. He has impressed me so much this week with his attitude towards his learning, working hard in every single lesson to make sure that his work is the best that it can be. He has been polite, respectful and helpful to all adults across school and has gone above and beyond to make our classroom, and school, a wonderful place to be. I am beyond proud of you this week Thomas!

Jace - Jace has really impressed me this week with his attitude towards his learning; he has acted upon feedback provided and worked on improving his work in all lessons across the curriculum to make it the very best that it can be. Jace has been respectful to adults and has shown kindness when interacting with adults and children. He has taken responsibility for his learning, and his interactions with others, and has really made me proud. Well done, Jace.

Headteacher Award

Each week in our Celebration Assembly, Mrs Powell chooses someone who has really impressed her during the week and presents them with her Headteacher Award trophy.

My superstar award for world book week goes to Maggie in Year 4. Maggie was an exemplary pupil on our class trip to Magna yesterday, and she also took a book with her for the journey which she did not put down. An avid reader that loves to share a tale and this is evident in all that she does with her learning in class. Well done Maggie, you are such an inspirational reader who has a wonderful passion for books.

Makaton Sign Of The Week

The children are continuing to learn Makaton's 'Sign of the week' each week. Each Monday, the children learn the new sign for that week. We thought it would be useful to share the following week's sign with parents/carers on our Friday blog so you can get involved too if you wish. Please click on the link below to see the sign for the coming week.

Request for resources please

In preparation for our STEMathon next Thursday, as part of Science week, we would like to ask if anyone has any plastic bottles and newspapers that they would be willing to donate to school please. If you have any of these items, please bring them to your child's teacher by next Wednesday at the latest please.

World Book Day celebrations

This week we have had a very busy week of all things books, as we celebrated World Book Day.

On Monday, we started the week off with a visit from Phil Sheppard. The children joined Phil for an assembly where he read a story to them and explained all about his work as both an author and illustrator. Phil then worked with the children to produce an illustration and went through each stage step by step to show the children how he worked. The children all produced their own version of Phil's illustration, which were all amazing. We would like to thank Phil for coming to spend the day with us and providing some inspiration which we hope will produce some future authors and illustrators.

On Tuesday, we held the school final of the Danum Read Aloud competition. All the participants performed a piece of poetry for our Reading Ambassadors. The Ambassadors were blown away by the performances and the winners for each year group were as follows:

Year 3 - Ottavia

Year 4 - Belle

Year 5 - Darcy

Year 6 - Valentina

The overall winner was Valentina, who will go on to perform at the final of the Danum Read Aloud competition which is being held at Danum Museum and Art Gallery at the end of this month. Good luck Valentina!

On Wednesday, Boggledybook Children's Bookshop joined us for the afternoon so those children who wished to could visit the bookshop to purchase a new book for a fantastic price. All the children in school received a free book for World Book Day and we also received 30 free books for our libraries.

On Thursday, the children took part in some live World Book Days events within their classes.

Today, to round off our week of celebrations, we invited parents/carers into school to share 'Breakfast with a book' with the children. This was an opportunity to get together and get immersed in the joy of literacy whilst enjoying some breakfast. We appreciate that not everyone could make this event, but we made sure that all children had some time reading and enjoying some breakfast. It was also an opportunity for the children (and staff!) to dress up as their favourite Roald Dahl characters today. There were some amazing costumes!

Please visit our X (formerly Twitter) account to have a look at our celebrations this week.

Lots Of Socks Day Friday 21st March

On Friday 21st March, we would like the children to wear some socks that will get them noticed to help us to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day. They might be mismatched socks or very bright socks - whatever you child would like to wear along with their normal school uniform.

Hill House Spelling Bee

On Tuesday this week, five of our Year 6 children took part in the annual Hill House Spelling Bee. There were 15 schools in total and this is our third year taking part in this event. The children were slightly nervous before the event started, but their nerves didn't show once the competition got underway.

The first round was a written round where the children had to go up onto the stage and spell six words. Those who were successful in this round took part in the final knockout round, which was a spoken round. All the children on the stage took it in turns to spell a variety of different words - if they spelt their word incorrectly, that was the end of their time in the competition.

Our children did amazingly well and loved taking part in the event. Ava was our top speller and went through to the spoken round. She was very confident when spelling her words and the word she got knocked out of the competition with was pterodactyl - you were so close Ava!

Well done to everyone who took part. We are all really proud of you - you did so well and your team spirit shone through.
